Today’s blog post was inspired by a recent conversation between some Moreover employees. My hope is that this post will give you some insight into who we are as a company and why we do what we do.

Numbers Do Lie (or Can Mislead)

Moreover is strong in the Media Monitoring field — our online news coverage is second to none. But why do some other media monitoring brands tout vast numbers of social media sites, compared to our more humble-sounding index?

The answer lies in what information our customers are trying to glean from their research. There is a considerable amount of noise that becomes a distraction (information overload). Effective monitoring of impactful sources is the driving force behind our efforts to grow and maintain pertinent coverage of social media.

Quantity of Data vs. Quality of Understanding

Just like any media monitoring company, we have competing goals. We want more coverage and more data, while keeping the tools that our clients use lightning fast and giving them only the data that helps them solve their needs.

That “only” is important.

Beware the Big

Moreover owns the ping server Weblogs.com. We have access to data of millions and millions of blogs posting content daily. We know where to look if we’d ever want to inflate our numbers, but we won’t.

Instead, we choose a “White List” approach, in which sources are vetted before they make it into our clients’ search results. When our Newsdesk clients run their searches, the data they want is more likely to be at their fingertips, rather than scattered amongst poor quality data.

More data is better only so long as it can be seen and used. Adding more content to sift through can make finding usable content more difficult. Having too much data can be worse than too little when it hinders the discovery of relevant content.

Drawbacks and Trade-offs

Of course the White List approach has its own issues. An important blog may not be covered when it’s needed. And, it makes it harder to track all mentions of keywords across all social media.

To mitigate this, Moreover’s Client Services and Editorial teams work with our clients to add the blogs and other social media that are important to them. This customer-focused coverage expansion process ensures that we provide broad coverage across multiple industries and niches. We also look at our own data for mentions of new sites, while seeking out other high-value sources of data.

A brief note on “full coverage”: With countless blogs being created and abandoned daily, it’s unlikely that anyone has full coverage. It is more accurate to say “less incomplete coverage”.

Pride in our Numbers

Moreover is proud of our 3.5 million social media feeds and our 55,000 online News sources. The number that makes us most proud, though, is our 90%+ customer retention rate. That number clearly shows we are on the right path. And we’ll continue to grow our source list in ways that bring customers value and help them find the data they need to solve their unique problems.

If you’re a Moreover customer and there are sources that are relevant to your needs that Moreover does not monitor, let us know. Our Client Services team will be happy to work with you to get these into our coverage.

One of the major Web success stories of the past 12 months has been the rise and rise (including a $6bn Google snub late last year) of Groupon, and other similar deal-of-the-day type sites. With the huge buzz and demand for these sites seemingly set to continue we are now seeing a flurry of publishers joining the phenomenon by partnering with the deal-of-the-day sites or creating their own in-house versions.

In the States both McClatchy and Media General have teamed up with Groupon to offer localised daily deals, the NYT have their own TimesLimited and now Hearst have a white label agreement with Analog Analytics to offer similar local deals.

European publishers aren’t too far behind as the Telegraph, DMGT, Archant, and Axel Springer are all moving into the group buying space, with rival publishers surely not too far behind.

Of course, as the home of content aggregation, the team here at Moreover are busy working away on a “one stop shop” for all the deals in your area, so if you’re interested in receiving one of our free daily alerts for all the deals where you live then get in touch below!

Periodically, it’s important for every company to grade itself and determine how it stacks up to the competition. A Media Monitoring company has released a video detailing the six criteria they view as critical to selecting an “online media intelligence partner.” We decided to address our performance using these six criteria. Rather than grade ourselves, however, we thought it would be more useful and meaningful if you grade us based on our responses below. So, here goes:

Coverage: 2.2 million+ sources returning 2.2 million news and social media results daily through a unified portal; ability to find non-feed-based content (e.g., academic and government sites, research group reports, company websites) by going out and collecting influential sources not on the RSS radar; delves into 800+ searchable industry categories spanning 100+ countries and 50+ languages.

Relevance: Sophisticated, cutting-edge filtering and refinement tools and an editorial review team weed out irrelevant information and spam quickly; intuitive, user-friendly search tools enable users to pinpoint their most relevant news and social media content rapidly; industry-leading “feed of feeds” using the Web’s original ping server ensures returning real-time relevant results.

Speed: Not only does the powerful weblogs.com ping server reliably gather results fast, easy-to-use tools are in place to share information rapidly via customized newsletter, email alerts, and feed sharing tools; Fortune 500 clients and the world’s leading media monitoring agencies depend on Moreover to be fast, fresh, and focused.

Analytics/Analysis: An easily learned and operated dashboard provides capability to access massive global content and filter it down to the “best of the best” results–making research and development efforts less laborious, and much more accurate and relevant; offers on-the-fly analysis (e.g., mentions of companies, people, products, events and stock tickers); enables creation and sharing of charts to simplify presentation of R&D information.

Account Service: Help is available via both phone and email; experienced professionals can help with everything from troubleshooting to training, adding new sources to assessing best ways to maximize client value; besides automated filtering and scrubbing, real people provide editorial review—enhancing both quality and quantity of content.

Adaptability: An entire suite of media monitoring and market & competitive intelligence solutions offers maximum choice and flexibility in how information is gathered, refined and shared; a comprehensive client service team stands ready to provide further customization; R&D to enhance and expand services based on client feedback is ongoing and omnipresent.

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s Newsdesk update, we are pleased to announce the release of an updated search tab within the Metabase Portal:

Moreover developed the new Search functionality at the request of our clients, to expand on the search options we provide across our Source Lists. This option enables our clients to submit Source Lists to determine whether Moreover is already harvesting specific sites in the News Metabase and/or Social Media Metabase.

The tool provides either exact or partial matches. Where a link is not matched precisely, but the domain is part of our index, this will appear as a partial result.

All results returned provide the relevant source information and metadata as found in the other tabs within the Metabase Portal by clicking the grey button next to each result. The Feed Class column defines whether the matched entry is part of the News Metabase or Social Media Metabase.

We hope this additional functionality will really show off our sources lists and let us know should you have any questions or feedback!

Commenting on winning two awards in its first-ever CODiE competition, Moreover Technologies’ President Paul J. Farrell said, “It’s a great honor. We are thrilled. We had so much competition and great products we were competing against. This is an incredible achievement for our people. Our total gratitude goes out to the association and all they do in the industry.”

We have been nominated in the Best Content Aggregation Solution, which “Recognizes the best product that gathers or collects information or applications from disparate online sources for reuse, resale, or distribution from, a single platform. Products may be developed for the broader market or customized based on user needs.“ We’d love to thank the team at SIIA for considering us for such a prestigious award and for the opportunity to test what we feel is our best product yet.

Winners are announced next week, on January 25, so check back in with us then to see how we did!
