See Moreover’s Olympic Coverage in Action through the BBC

This week we have been exploring how the top Olympic sponsors having been benefiting from their advertising budget. As a change of pace, today we’ll be looking at how Moreover Technologies is powering coverage of the Olympics through the BBC website.

The British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC) has some of the best Olympic coverage in the world and Moreover Technologies, Newsdesk and Search Engine Toolkit, help provide value to the BBC visitors.

There are 3 levels of Olympic coverage offered through the BBC website:

Countries

Every country has their own news page, listing key facts, records, medal counts, and more. The “Around the Web” news is powered by Moreover and is a part of every country’s page.

Great Britain’s page:

Sports

Just like countries, each sport being showcased in the Olympics has its own dedicated page. Moreover’s tools allow the “Around the Web” section to be populated with relevant news with minimal manual intervention.

A portion of the  swimming page:

Individuals

Top individual Olympians also have their own pages supported by Moreover’s news. Hundreds of pages at www.BBC.co.uk showcase how information can be automatically displayed using a robust taxonomy to create value for visitors.

Newsdesk and Search Engine Toolkit: Minor Change in How Paragraph Breaks Will Be Displayed

On Wednesday 4th July, Moreover will be making a change to the way in which News article extracts are presented in the Newsdesk and Search Engine Toolkit products.

Currently the extract appears in non-paragraphed format within the source code of any RSS, TSV, Atom, or HTML feed that is using News content.  Starting on the 4th of July, paragraph breaks will be included (where present) in the text of the extract.

Please note that all other media types which make up our Social Media coverage (Blogs, Comments, Social Networks, Forums, etc.) already output in this format.

We do not expect there to be any issues for our clients as a result of this change, but if you have any questions about this upcoming update, please contact your Client Services Representative.

Gotaweekend? Getafriend and get away with Getamap

Posted by Chad

Do you have a couple of days and nothing to do? Head on over to Survey Ordnance’s website and check out their Getamap feature. It’s great for planning day trips. Choose the place you want to go and see information about things to do and places to see. Get driving directions and weather forecasts as well.

Getamap also has local news headlines powered by none-other than Moreover Technologies. It’s a great example of combining real time news and geolocation. Just one of the many applications of Search Engine Toolkit.

Moreover’s free RSS feeds now includes blogs

We’ve just added blogs to the free Moreover RSS feeds pages. The blog search runs over the latest posts from around 250,000 blogs, i.e. those on the UGC Metabase White List.  You can use the sliders to increase the relevancy and quality of the search results, for example slide the sources filter to the right and you’ll just get results from top blogs (using Moreover’s feedRank).

You can also select one of the prebuilt feed categories and search within that – by sticking to a predefined universe of content you can get even more specific with your results.  The full list of the new blog feeds is also on the prebuilt feeds page, just click the green RSS icons,

Moreover’s search engine service gets blogs

We’re pleased to announce that blogs are now available with the Moreover search engine service (see Search Engine Toolkit).  Alongside news sources you can search across the latest blog posts from the Moreover White List of approx. 250,000 blogs. Search across the title, and/or the post’s text, slice by rank or topic, apply relevancy filters, set a time range, and a whole host of other filters and options.

With the toolkit you basically get API access to our news+blogs search engine. Customers can completely white label search engine features and imbed them within their applications and UI. Effectively it outsources news aggregation and search engine development so you can focus on the actual delivery of services to your customers and users. Case in point: BusinessWeek’s BusinessExchange - interweaving Moreover-fed news links across their universe of topics.

For our free RSS feed loving folk – we’ll be adding blogs alongside news there too in the near future, so stay tuned!

Combine feeds and search within RSS

Good news for those who like their news done good - We’ve added a few options to the free RSS feeds on the Moreover.com website so you can tailor them even tighter by topic.  Now you can combine, cross-reference and block feeds from each other.  You can also run keyword searches over the news categories and create your own custom versions. It’s easy, go to the Combine Feeds page to find out how.

A few examples for your delectation:

- merge feeds:

- cross-reference feeds:

- block feeds:

- keyword search over feeds:

You can also combine any of the above, for instance keyword search over a set of cross-referenced feeds.  We also added another 100 feeds to the list of prebuilts, takes it up to 600.  Suppose more news equals good news…

Search Engine Toolkit gets a new portal

We have a new home for our News Search API – the Search Engine Toolkit product portal. Now customers can login and get full search API details, all the search filters and output options (close to 30), along with example search integrations, a gallery and online FAQs and support.

Wondering what a Search Engine Toolkit does?

Skipping the smart-but-useless-Alec answer (“well that all depends on what you do with it….”), it basically gives you access to a live news search engine and a set of tools that let you control and focus the search results. There’s no frontend UI as such, just HTTP calls and RSS returns. That makes it inherently flexible, and how you integrate all depends on how and where you want your users to access and view news headlines (ok, back to smart Alec after all).

For example, the news search on our free feeds page uses the SET – it’s just a search box with a couple of filter options. Our own Newsdesk uses it too – here it’s powering a full enterprise application. Moreover client BusinessWeek on their part uses it to power news headlines in their Business Exchange network, while news prediction site HubDub uses it to automatically match headlines to users’ questions (see `related news` on this page). Media analysis company MediaMiser take the toolkit to integrate Moreover news in their enterprise service.

In a nutshell, there really is no set way for deploying news content, so the toolkit’s constructed to work to your scope and scale, and fit with any design.

(oh did we mention OpenCalais integration coming to a search engine toolkit near you soon??)
