Online news in rude health

Pew Research Center have produced a survey looking at the online habits of teens and young adults, in particular their use of social media and news consumption online. While the survey seems to suggest blogging has plateaued out to become a more niche pursuit, social networking and online news show no signs of waning.

Sixty two percent of teenagers online are currently getting their news-fix over the Internet, a stat that peaks at 77% during major news events. This compares favorably with the 72% of online adults who access the Web for news or political information.

While blogging (15% of youngsters) and Tweeting (8% of teens) don’t look to be capturing the imagination of the young, social networking certainly has. A whopping 73% of wired American teens now use social networking sites (up from 55% three years ago), similarly 72% of online young adults also such sites, both being significantly higher than the 40% of adults who do so.

Overall the survey produces an interesting snapshot of web usage among the young, and it’ll be interesting to see how these trends continue to shift in the future especially as sites like Facebook continue to integrate online news.

Want breaking sport news? There’s an app for that..

Exciting news from the team here at Moreover, we’ve released our first iPhone app into the wild and are eager to hear what you think of it!

The app allows users to keep up-to-date with breaking sport headlines from global news sources across 25 different sport news feeds including football (soccer and American), baseball, basketball, Formula 1, golf, tennis and many more. You can also browse through the top sports stories of the day or search the news for the latest views and scores on your favourite team or athlete.

Behind the scenes the app is constantly checking the Web’s news sites for breaking headlines and links back to them whenever you click a headline. The Moreover Sport News app covers sport-specific and local news sites, along with the familiar sites such as the BBC and ESPN we all know, so whatever your sport we’ve got it covered.

Other features include a “more stories like this” functionality, email this article and post to Facebook.

News on Newsdesk

Just in time for Christmas we have unwrapped a few goodies in Newsdesk that we hope will deliver a little bit of festive cheer!

In a final Newsdesk update for 2009 we are adding a splash of colour to things by including news images alongside headlines, where available, and displaying source favicons next to source names in both news and social media search results.

Also in this update is the added functionality to now search over news sources from individual US States, complimenting the existing UK Counties search filter. So should the focus of your query only be based around New England sources then this update allows you to quickly and easily isolate those news sites relevant to you.

As mentioned in our previous post the social media content and coverage is continuing to grow, so alongside the news content Newsdesk provides a complete media monitoring package. Should you have any questions or feedback on these changes please let us know!

Moreover Metabase modifications

As we approach the end of the year we’d like to announce a number of enhancements to both our News and UGC Metabase products.

Over the past few months we have been particularly busy growing our coverage of news and social media sources, with much more still to come in the New Year. The UGC Metabase now serves around 750k posts a day from our spam-free White List of social media sites. This represents a 200% increase in volume from earlier in the year, and coverage has now jumped to 435k feeds watched with a further increase due by year-end. Coverage has particularly been boosted over platforms like Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and Wikipedia to deliver a rich and diverse range of social media sources now being watched, along with other microblogging platforms, consumer reviews, forums, Q&A sites and more. We have also increased the number of social media feeds with geotagging, so users can now easily list and organise sources by nationality and region.

On the News Metabase side of things we now index over half a million news articles a day from 32k sources, a twenty percent increase in recent months. Other improvements to the news side include enhancing the way we identify and tag article authors and recently growing the number of news categories available to 800. 2010 to be the year of local?

We posted just last week about ‘local’ being the new ‘social’ for news publishers and it seems the guardian.co.uk (perhaps even taking editorial inspiration from the Moreover Blog!?) agrees.

The Digital Content Blog has posted a nice write-up of just a handful of the developments over in the States where many online news outlets are already trying to take advantage of this new ‘hyperlocal‘ buzz. AOL and some former eBay execs are both taking interesting steps in this direction, with AOL looking to expand it’s recently acquired Patch network and eBay founder Pierre Omidyar bidding to kick-start his local news service Peer News. Not forgetting that we have blogged in the past about YouTube’s efforts in this area and with foursquare regularly being touted as the ‘next Twitter’ is hyperlocal getting you excited?

Twitter Lists making the news

Twitter Lists have been generating plenty of buzz this past week since their launch at the end of October, and it’s fascinating to watch the many ways they are being used in such a short space of time.

Mashable have published a piece on how news outfits are really running with this new feature, such as creating staff lists and gathering registers on favoured Twitterers. The New York Times staff list, already including 96 staffers, looks like a great resource for finding insightful tweets plus shows the NYT understands the boundaries between traditional news and social media are increasingly blurred.

In the UK The Guardian has created a handy list of Members of Parliament, so if you want to quiz your local MP on their expenses the Guardian’s list could be a good place to find them! Similarly CNN has curated a list featuring politicians involved in November 3 elections.

Any other particularly noteworthy news lists out there? The value seems to lie in creating filtered, specific lists that can that provide relevant information without all the noise and for the publisher there is always the potential to drive more traffic to their site.

BBC suggests strictly social relaunch

We touched upon it last month with a blog post about plans from the BBC to revamp its news website. Today’s MediaGuardian has an update on that story with more information on Auntie’s intent for the new-look site.

Antony Rose, controller of Vision and Online at the BBC, has hinted that social media will have a role to play in the future of the BBC’s websites and they are keen to research “what the next generation in social media will be”.

The links between news and social media are certainly intriguing, this move by the BBC could be quite innovative in this particular space. As a leading of both news and social media monitoring solutions we’ll be keen to see how this move from the BBC develops and look forward to further diversification from the Beeb.

Beeb outlines online operations

Last week’s BBC Open Day saw the Beeb reaffirm its commitment to the link economy and, in the process, keep driving traffic to many of the publicly funded corporation’s fiercest critics. The clickthrough numbers look pretty impressive, rising from 10 million per week in February to 12 million today – in part powered by the BBC’s partnership with Moreover, and these stats should only increase as Auntie pushes more outbound linking.

Also on the agenda was the BBC’s plans to refresh its BBC News website ahead of an expected UK General Election next spring, this “spring clean” looking to improve layout and navigation rather than introducing any new editorial content. The BBC Sport website can also expect a similar makeover as the corporation readies itself for next year’s World Cup and intends to maximise the newly acquired Football League online rights.

Reuters loves linking

Chris Ahearn, Media President at Thomson Reuters, has spoken up in favour of the “link economy”. You may have noticed the recent ripple within the blogosphere over the issues surrounding linking and the World Wide Web, so it is certainly refreshing to hear a major publisher speak up with an understanding of how linking can be beneficial to all the parties involved.
